The new company members will join the on-going celebrations of the JYB’s Ruby Anniversary and will bring the curtain down on this milestone celebration in grand and fitting style when they take to the stage in August, exactly 40 years to the month since this pioneering company danced in Aberdeen Scotland in 1977!

“The JYB looks forward to welcoming a new intake of passionate, determined, and disciplined young dancers,” said Artistic Director Mark Hawkins. “Our 2016 and 2017 company will be remembered forever as the 40th Anniversary Company – it is an astounding legacy that we are taking forward into a new decade,” he said.

Successful candidates will be notified of their acceptance by Friday February 3 2017. Once in the company the JYB members attend classes and rehearsals on Saturday afternoons and sometimes on Sundays as well. They are often required to attend rehearsals on public holidays and during the school holidays.

The JYB charges a modest annual membership fee and also offers a number of bursaries to deserving candidates ensuring that there are no barriers for acceptance into the company. If a dancer has the ability and the right attitude the JYB management will welcome them into the company. For forty years the JYB has increased access to the arts for the youth in Johannesburg, fulfilling their founding mandate to give young dancers from the greater Johannesburg area an opportunity to be a part of a professionally run company and to experience the dynamics of performing in an annual season.

The Johannesburg Youth Ballet is a proud and grateful recipient of National Arts Council (NAC) Company funding and extends warm thanks and acknowledgement to the NAC, as well as its media partner, Creative Feel magazine.
